007_which one is the real Barbie?
sand cast glass face, projector, Barbie image from Google image searchI used sand casting to create a masculine face in clear glass and projected an image of a classic Barbie’s face onto the glass. The soft feminine features presented on a masculine look were designed to blur the lines between the traditional ideology of "men" and "women." This work was inspired by a dream I had about gender transition. It made me wonder: does a plastic doll even have a gender? If a piece of colored material can be female, why deny these choices to real people? After all, Barbie is a made-up human with a real gender. Could we, perhaps, imagine real people with made-up genders?
